Making up for lost time. February Sketches.
Dearest Friend,
We are through the shortest month of the year, and it has been a whirlwind of ice crystals and blossom petals. What a dichotomy!
Yesterday was February 29; a sweet unicorn of a day.
Everyone around me was talking about how it was the “extra day.”
I suppose in some ways it was. But in fact, for three years we were gradually falling behind by a quarter of a day. We were letting our grasp on the string of time become looser and looser. Then this year, we pulled on that string and caught up with the extra minutes we had been dropping.
That is like life, isn’t it?
Sometimes we are able to keep up with everything at once. We spin plates. We balance on our unicycle all while aiming it across the narrow tightrope that is strung between the posts that mark dawn and dusk each day.
But sometimes we can’t. There are times when we let some things slide so that we can focus on more important things. We know that we will catch up someday. My laundry pile expands; I’ll get to it. My stack of unread books teeters on my bedside table; I’ll get to them, too. I’ll pull that string taut someday soon.
If our calendar can drop time, and then make up for it, can’t we give ourselves some slack as well?
So, be gentle with yourself. Do what you can today. Even our calendar can’t do it all every year.
Sending virtual hugs…

P.S. You are awesome! I recently received my library statement for all the times my books have been borrowed from Canadian libraries. Did you know that I get royalty payments for each time a book is borrowed, which is sponsored by the Canada Council? It was amazing! Keep borrowing those books! It makes a huge difference to authors. Borrow mine. Borrow your favourite author. Return it. And borrow it again! You’re like library fairies keeping the system going!
