Dearest Friend,
We may not notice the hours and days whizzing by, or feel the earth turning under our feet, but one day we look up from our to-do lists and notice that the trees are turning colour.
This is the time to turn over a new leaf, so to speak.
Ever since my schoolgirl days, I've taken time to make a few personal resolutions in the autumn. These resolutions always seem more spiritually motivated and positive than the resolutions made in the thinness of January (when I'm feeling worn out and slightly desperate).
Autumnal resolutions hold the lushness of harvest festivals in their heart.
If New Year’s Day resolutions are about conquering our wills; autumn resolutions are about nurturing our authentic needs.
Autumn resolutions tell us that there is never a right time. There is only now.
We have to gently start from where we are, no matter the circumstances. Our personal circumstances might not be ideal, but they probably won’t change that much by tomorrow. The global circumstances might feel overwhelming, but maybe, just maybe, a few small improvements in our personal lives might ripple outwards to improve the world around us.
If we don’t start from these present circumstances, there is no guarantee that tomorrow will be better.
We can make a new start today, and today, and today. And we can start again all the todays after that.
Personally, I think my small resolution this autumn will be to go for a walk with my sketchbook every day — no matter the weather. I might be buffeted by seasonal winds, slowly soaked by misty mizzle, or drenched in drizzling downpours, but I think a little bit of fresh air will do a lot of good for my mental and physical health.
What are you going to start with your one, wild, precious today?
Sending virtual hugs,
Jane

A Selection of October Sketches
The full moon behind storm clouds. Part of my full moon series.
Samhain is the end of the Celtic year so it's only natural that we should feel inclined to slow down, make resolutions and begin the big dream time of winter, setting us up nicely for when spring finally arrives.
Love in your sketches as always. The Van Gogh image gave me the feeling that that man infront of the painting is Van Gogh himself time travelling to relook at his work!
I love the idea of Autumn Resolutions. Your idea of a daily walk with your art sounds perfect for me too!
